Weekly Survey (October 20, 2020): Stress, Mental Health, and COVID-19

This survey is conducted in collaboration with the Association for Canadian Studies (ACS) and published in the Canadian Press. 

STRESS AND MENTAL HEALTH

  • Over one-quarter (27%) of Canadians think that we are in the worst period of the crisis now. This proportion has been trending upward for the past three weeks.
  • 68% of Canadians are satisfied overall with the measures put in place by their provincial government to fight the pandemic. This proportion (identical to last week) is at its lowest point since late March.

SURVEY METHODOLOGY

This web survey was conducted from October 16-18, 2020, with 1,512 Canadians and 1,001 Americans, 18 years of age or older, randomly recruited from LEO’s online panel. To view the October 20, 2020 report, CLICK HERE.

  • 24% of Canadians and 16% of Americans report that their mental health and stress levels are currently worse compared to during the first wave of the pandemic in March/April.
  • Currently, Canadians’ biggest sources of stress related to COVID-19 are when the pandemic will end/how bad it will get (17%), social isolation/being unable to socialize/see friends and family (16%), and worries about their family’s health and safety (15%).
  • Americans’ biggest sources of stress are when the pandemic will end/how bad it will get (15%), and worries about their family’s health and safety (15%). 14% of Americans report that they are not currently experiencing any stress related to COVID-19.
