Weekly Survey (September 15, 2020): Second Wave, Relaxing Measures and Fear of the Virus

This survey is conducted in collaboration with the Association for Canadian Studies (ACS) and published in the Canadian Press. 

COVID-19

  • In the past month, 57% of Canadians and 61% of Americans report that they have relaxed in terms of following one or more of the public health safety measures mentioned. 37% of Canadians report they have relaxed in terms of proper social distancing. Among Americans, 44% have relaxed in terms of always wearing a mask outside their homes, and 43% have relaxed in terms of proper social distancing.
  • 25% of Canadians and 37% of Americans believe that COVID-19 is no more dangerous than the seasonal flu.
  • Given the situation in their province/state, 34% of Canadians and 23% of Americans think we have entered the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • 23% of Canadians and 41% of Americans believe that governments and health officials are exaggerating the threat posed by COVID-19 and the need for continued and rigorous public health safety measures.
  • 63% of Canadians are afraid of contracting COVID-19, an increase of 7 percentage points since last week.
These are some of the findings of Leger’s latest survey, conducted from September 11-13, 2020, with 1,539 Canadians and 1,001 Americans, 18 years of age or older, randomly recruited from LEO’s online panel.
