With the COVID-19 vaccine campaigns progressing in Canada and the United States, and the summer holiday season upon us, many Canadians and Americans are wondering when they will be able to travel and whether they will need to present proof of COVID-19 vaccination to do so.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Temperatures have reached record highs in Canada this week (especially in Lytton, B.C., where thermometers hit 49.6 degrees, the hottest temperature ever recorded in Canada!).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite the blistering heat, it\u2019s the time of year when Canadians and Americans are thinking about or already planning to take a summer vacation. Much to the chagrin of some, the borders between Canada and the United States are still closed and will be until at least July 21, 2021. With the Canadian government continuing to \u201cstrongly advise\u201d against non-essential international travel, the future remains uncertain.1<\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n

SHOULD PROOF OF COVID-19 VACCINATION BE REQUIRED TO TRAVEL?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Over the past few months, there has been debate over whether showing proof of vaccination, perhaps in the form of a \u201cvaccine passport\u201d, is justified, and in addition, whether governments will mandate it. In our North American Tracker survey conducted in early May<\/a>, 61% of Canadians and 41% of Americans agreed their government should implement a vaccine passport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It will be interesting to monitor whether support for a \u201cvaccine passport\u201d type document increases or decreases as restrictions lift.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In late May 2021, before the vacation season began in earnest, our North American Tracker asked Canadians and Americans<\/a> whether they think people should need to show proof of COVID-19 vaccination to participate in certain activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When it comes to travel-related activities like flying on a plane and staying in a hotel, over half of Canadians and Americans would support showing proof of vaccination (support is lower among Americans).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
