{"id":6222,"date":"2023-04-13T10:42:03","date_gmt":"2023-04-13T14:42:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.legeropinion.com\/?p=6222"},"modified":"2023-04-13T10:42:05","modified_gmt":"2023-04-13T14:42:05","slug":"north-american-tracker-april-13-2023","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.legeropinion.com\/en\/nouvelles\/north-american-tracker-april-13-2023\/","title":{"rendered":"North American Tracker (April 13, 2023): Crime and Violence, Politics and Trump\u2019s Indictment"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">DISCOVER OUR MOST RECENT RESULTS BELOW!&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>This survey is conducted in collaboration with the Association for Canadian Studies (ACS) and published in the Canadian Press. <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/leger360.com\/surveys\/legers-north-american-tracker\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>This series of surveys is available on Leger\u2019s website.<\/em><\/a><em><\/em>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-electoral-system-and-possible-foreign-interference\">VIOLENCE, CRIME AND PUBLIC SAFETY<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Canadians and Americans share <strong>similar perspectives on the level of crime<\/strong> in their communities and the solutions to improve public safety.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>65% of Canadians and 55% of Americans believe <strong>crime and violence have gotten worse <\/strong>in their community compared to pre-pandemic times.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In total, 39% of Canadians and 36% of Americans said they or someone close to them has feared for their safety in the last 6 months.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Canadians\u2019 and Americans\u2019 perspectives on <strong>further restrictions on gun ownership<\/strong> are more similar than some may think.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In Canada, 47% of Canadians believe stricter restrictions on gun ownership would make them feel safer where they live, while 42% believe this would not affect their feeling of safety. 11% believe that stricter restrictions would make them feel less safe.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In the U.S., 43% of Americans believe stricter restrictions on gun ownership would make them feel safer where they live, while 40% believe this would not affect their feeling of safety.&nbsp;17% believe that stricter restrictions would make them feel less safe.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Out of a list of 9 potential actions to reduce crime and violence, the top 3 actions that Canadians and Americans think would make communities feel safer are:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Tougher penalties<\/strong> for those who are found guilty of committing violent crimes (81% of Canadians, 75% of Americans)&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Increasing funding for <strong>mental health services<\/strong> (79% of Canadians, 68% of Americans)&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Increasing <strong>police presence<\/strong> in their community (75% of Canadians, 70% of Americans)&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/leger360.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/20230412-Tracker-Highlight-2-Top-3-activities-that-would-make-communities-safer-EN-US-version-1024x1024.jpg\" alt=\"Top 3 actions that Canadians and Americans think would make communities feel safer.\" class=\"wp-image-41231\" width=\"600\" height=\"600\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-canadian-federal-politics\">CANADIAN FEDERAL POLITICS<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is a <strong>four-point gap in voting intentions that favours the CPC<\/strong> (34% to 30% for the LPC), and the NDP remains third at 21%. While PM Trudeau holds on to a two-point edge on best PM (23% to 21%) over Pierre Poilievre, overall satisfaction with the current government remains fairly low, at 37%.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-trump-indictment\">THE TRUMP INDICTMENT<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The majority of Americans <strong>approve<\/strong> of Donald Trump\u2019s <strong>indictment<\/strong> (55%) and a similar proportion (54%) believe he will be found <strong>guilty<\/strong> as charged. Results for these questions differ sharply among partisan lines, as expected, and appear to not have hurt Trump\u2019s electoral fortunes among Republicans.
